Argentine Unions to Announce National Space Creation in Protest of Labor Reform

The group of CGT trade unions critical of the central leadership and known as the United Trade Unions Front (FreSU) will announce this week the nationalization of its space to further distance itself from the position of more moderate unionists amid the internal conflict reignited by the labor reform pushed by Javier Milei's administration. The labor modernization law, which introduces major changes to labor legislation, entered the judicial process after being enacted by the government following an injunction filed by the CGT leadership. In this context, the 'hardline' unions seek to remain active and ensure their challenging stance towards the central leadership does not go dormant. Representatives of FreSU, including unions like UOM (metalworkers), Aceiteros (oil workers), Pilots, and both CTA federations such as ATE, met on Monday afternoon at the Buenos Aires headquarters of the metalworkers' union to finalize the next steps now that the labor reform has moved from the political arena to the judiciary. According to sources from FreSU to the Argentine News Agency, on Tuesday and Wednesday, representatives of this bloc will travel to the Fuegian cities of Ushuaia and Río Grande to support a local 'march and strike.' Furthermore, on Thursday or Friday, FreSU leaders will hold a press conference to inform about 'the various actions that will be generated' and announce 'the participation of more organizations' in this coalition. 'We will communicate some issues that are being constructed. We want to make the movement throughout the country,' a spokesperson for the sector told the Argentine News Agency. This bloc has been cultivating a more 'intransigent' profile against the libertarian administration through its own agenda of demonstrations held in the cities of Córdoba and Rosario and marches to Congress each time the initiative was debated in the chambers (twice in the Senate and once in the Deputies).
